RSS - Really Simple Syndication
Whilst there are many RSS feed readers (or news aggregators) available, we thought it might be useful if we showed you how to install and configure one of them. The others will operate in a similar way, and you should be able to use the instructions that follow to help you with those.
Before we do that, you may already have the technology installed on your computer:
- If you use Internet Explorer 7, you can find full instructions for using RSS feeds on the Microsoft website.
- If you useWindows Vista, you can find full instructions for using RSS feeds on the Microsoft website
- .... or full instructions to add them to your sidebar can be found here.
- If you use Firefox, you can find full instructions for using RSS feeds here.
If you do not have any of these, or prefer to use a separate reader ...
- Download and
install SharpReader from here. Follow the instructions to install the
program.
- If you see the RSS icon
on a web site and would like to subscribe to the feed, click on the
icon.
A page of gobbledy-gook will open.- Highlight (select) the address in the browser and copy it to
your computer's clipboard. (Use Edit / Copy or press Ctrl+C)
- Start (or switch to) SharpReader.
Paste the copied address into SharpReader's address bar and press
<Enter>.
- The current items in the feed will appear.
- Click on the Subscribe button.
Depending on how you have configured SharpReader, you should now
be automatically advised that the feed has been updated within minutes of it
being done.
